It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play

When: Nov. 28-Dec. 16 2012

For those who haven't caught the three previous productions staged locally in the last four years (including Cary Players' 2011 stand), this season boasts three more productions of two different "radio play" adaptations of Frank Capra's 1946 holiday classic. All are actually based on Hollywood's golden-age practice of regularly adapting major motion pictures for radio. (In fact, film star Jimmy Stewart anchored the Lux Radio Theater version of It's A Wonderful Life in 1947; you can hear the full show free at bit.ly/LuxLife47.)

In Playmakers Rep's production of playwright Joe Landry's adaptation, an unexpected guest finds himself sitting in with a quartet of actors on the night of the Big Broadcast, a visitation that itself might influence one man's past and future. Guest director Nelson Eusebio III oversees Ray Dooley, Brandon Garegnani, Katja Hill, Todd Lawson and Maren Searle (with music by Mark Lewis). Preview performances are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday–Friday; opening night is Saturday, and the the show runs through Dec. 16. —Byron Woods
