Guillermo Gómez-Peña (pictured) is a performance artist and writer who was born in Mexico and arrived in the United States in 1987. Since then he has investigated border culture and trans-cultural identity through journalism, radio, video, poetry, installation and performance. He has received the Prix de la Parole at the International Theatre Festival of the Americas in 1989, a MacArthur Fellowship in 1991, and the American Book Award for 1997's The New World Border. Gómez-Peña will be performing his show, Brownout-Border Pulp Stories, Monday, Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. in Duke University's Bryan Center. In the performance, Gómez-Peña plays a spoken word brujo-poeta, to explore fears relating to immigration, globalization, the digital divide, censorship and interracial sexuality.
