If it sounds rare for artists to come out to support a venue, that's because it just doesn't happen much anymore. But Durham's long-standing Manbites Dog Theater (OK, it was founded in 1987, but that's a lifetime in local theater group years) gets a little help from its friends July 9, when local literary collective Mouth Candy hosts Open Wide: an evening of fiction, nonfiction and poetry readings, with music to boot--and all proceeds go to benefit Manbites Dog. Reading performers include Michigan's Davy Rothbart (founder of FOUND magazine) and the Indy's own Jenny Canipe, founder of Mouth Candy, which has organized area readings and its own 'zine since 1997. If readers aren't your thing, music will be provided by up-and-coming Virginia folk-singer Devon Sproule (pictured above) and Hillsborough's Glory in the Meeting House, among other performers. The evening requires very little of you--the audience--with pay-what-you-like tickets (they suggest at least a measly $5) for a great cause and a reception after the show. The benefit is Wednesday, July 9, at 8:15 p.m., Manbites Dog Theater. For more information, call 632-8614. Reservations are recommended; call 682-3343. --Brian Millikin
