The thing about a symphony orchestra is that its members don't usually run around and wade into their audience, wear technicolor T-shirts and tennis shoes, and use their instruments as props. National performing arts group Tales & Scales, however, has turned the stuffy image of classical musicians on its head. Critics had to invent a new term, "musictelling," to describe their innovative performances for children. The quartet--composed of a flutist, percussionist, bass trombonist and clarinetist--combines music, dance, story and theater to create magical retellings of well known fairy tales. The ArtsCenter of Carrboro will be hosting the company for a weeklong residency beginning Feb. 21. During their visit to the Triangle, the group will perform at The ArtsCenter, and in auditoriums and classrooms of area schools and libraries.
