Holiday Pops: A Pink Martini Christmas

When: Fri., Dec. 21, 8 p.m. and Sat., Dec. 22, 3 & 8 p.m. 2012

Pink Martini are the ultimate hipsters of international lounge music. They will cross their kaleidoscope with a snow globe for these holiday pops concerts, billed as "A Pink Martini Christmas." Adding spit and polish to old pop hits from France, Turkey, Brazil, Japan, Italy and Latin America may seem intransigently old-fashioned, but that's all right with founder and pianist Thomas Lauderdale. "The idea is to play and perform beautiful songs ... creating safe spaces for people to blossom and feel safe and cozy," he says. To that mix, add Pink Martini's fun and unmistakably modern originals, such as "Hey Eugene," about a drunken party hookup gone awry, and your cocktail is served. For this special holiday edition, the Portland-based world citizens have even invited some friends to share the stage: NPR's Ari Shapiro and The Von Trapps, four great-grandchildren of the real Captain and Maria Von Trapp. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
