Hillsborough Jazz Festival

When: Sat., Sept. 17, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. 2011

After a successful debut last year with a program celebrating Billy Strayhorn, Hillsborough's Jazz Fest returns to pay tribute to Billy Taylor. House pianist during the 1950s at the legendary New York jazz club Birdland, Taylor played with the era's finest, but is perhaps best known for his feature segments on the CBS News show Sunday Morning in the 1980s. The festival occurs on the lawns of the idyllic Moorefields Estate and features seven acts from the local area performing over seven hours. Perhaps the most exciting is the Will McBride Group, a versatile trio that surveys jazz, blues, funk and pop. Also playing are Marcus Mitchell, Marcus Anderson, Sweet Dreams, Frankie Alexander, the JazzTones and the Alamance Jazz Band. —Chris Parker
