Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer

When: Wed., March 13, 8 p.m. 2013

Shot on a budget that wouldn't cover the catering on a studio flick even back then, 1986's Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer languished on the shelf for years before becoming an unexpected critical hit when it was finally released in 1990. The reason for the delay? It was that rare film rated X for violence. But the chilling main character portrayed by Michael Rooker (now playing one-handed racist Merle Dixon on TV's The Walking Dead) and the film's unflinching portrayal of his world gave Henry a gravitas most slasher flicks still lack. It's so disturbing that it has had trouble getting an uncensored video release around the world, which makes this Cinema Overdrive screening all the more valuable. —Zack Smith
