Habitat for Humanity Durham Give!Guide Video

Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

Thousands of Triangle families live in substandard housing. For more than 40 years, Debbie rented a house with substandard electricity and plumbing. She raised her children there and took care of her parents there until they passed away. In 2010, when Habitat began building and rehabbing properties in her neighborhood, she submitted an application. After several months of contributing ‘sweat equity’ hours, attending homeownership classes and saving for a modest down payment, Debbie became a first-time homeowner just one block away from where she had rented.

Habitat purchased a foreclosed home that was originally built in 1955. Debbie was very interested in the property because it was so close to where she had lived for 40 years, but it was in need of many repairs. After it was completely renovated, the rehabbed home truly became Debbie’s dream home. She still lives close enough to walk to her longtime job at a neighborhood daycare. “I was so excited I could have just jumped out of my own skin,” Debbie says. “This experience was one of the most exciting things in my life next to my children being born.” The substandard home she left vacant was later condemned and demolished. Habitat purchased the lot and built a new home there, giving another family the same life-changing opportunity.
