Great Durham Pun Championship

When: Tue., Oct. 9, 7:30 p.m. 2012

We need this. In an election season of pundits firing gaseous rhetoric everywhere we turn, we need this. The Second Annual Great Durham Pun Championship goes bigger, leaving the Regulator Bookshop basement for the larger and more lubricated confines of Motorco. If you were lucky enough to jam yourself into the capacity audience for last year's debut event, the rib muscles you strained groaning at the rapid volleys of puns have probably healed. How it works: About 24 contestants go head-to-head, each allowed 10 seconds to emit a bon mot upon a predetermined theme. Duke rhetoric professor George Gopen presides over affairs, eventually crowning the last man or woman standing as Pun Master of Durham. Think you can hold your own in the fray? Email your name and address to regulatorbookshop@gmail.com to compete. Otherwise, prepare to endure rhyme and punishment. The $5 event starts at 7, but get there early. —Chris Vitiello
