Gov't Mule, Dr John

When: Wed., June 13, 6:30 p.m. 2012

Gov't Mule is a talented blues-rock act featuring Allman Brothers Band guitarist Warren Haynes. He's a terrific player and an adept leader, with skills informed as much by gospel and R&B as by Southern rock and blues. His band mints some heavy-duty boogie, led by Haynes' soulful vocals, though they aren't always as commanding as you'd like. However well they play, Gov't Mule will have their hands full following New Orleans icon Dr. John. Not only do his gruff vocals slink to a swampy shuffle that's as alluring as that of Tom Waits, but his last three albums of Big Easy funk and jazzy blues have been among his best. John's latest, Locked Down, with the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach producing, is more modern yet still imbued with a blues-soul feel. —Chris Parker
