Girls Rock NC Benefit
When: Thu., March 21, 8 p.m. 2013
Each year since 1987, Congress has passed resolutions to recognize March as Women's History Month. This year's theme is "Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination," an especially apropos choice given the hard work of organizations such as the Triangle nonprofit Girls Rock NC, which works to engage and empower young girls through music. Participants are drawn in by dreams of rocking out on stage, but they often leave with new ideas about self-esteem and collaboration. Annual summer camps and intermittent after-school programs build creative confidence, while offering older musicians a chance to give back to their community.
In 10 years, Girls Rock NC has presented more than 40 programs for girls in Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh. There's no experience level requirement, and the group makes scholarships available to would-be campers in need of financial aid. To cover such costs, they've lined up a winning cast of performers for this show, including Melissa Swingle, Skylar Gudasz, Stephanie Stewart and Sarah Shook. —Ashley Melzer
