Bynum General Store shows return

With major league baseball's first game occurring in March, April now hosts only one important opening day, that being the day of the first offering from the Front Porch Music Series in Bynum.

The 2004 Front Porch season began last Friday with roots-folk charmers Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion doing the honors at the Bynum General Store, and there are pass-the-hat shows scheduled for every Friday until the end of October, rain or shine. (Come the former, they just move it all inside.) Up this Friday is Raleigh's Kenny Roby, whose songs range from the historical ("The Wilderness") to the deeply personal ("Rather Not Know") and whose music offers nods to everybody from Elvis Costello and The Band to Bruce Springsteen in Nebraska mode and Randy Newman. The series boasts an eclectic schedule. Become a Friday night regular, and by fall you will have heard some of the best local bluegrass, rockabilly, gospel and power pop around.

Here's the April, May and June schedule:
April 16-- Kenny Roby
April 23-- The Big Fat Gap with Frank's Garage. (Benefit concert to aid boogie guitar legend David Brooks.)
April 30-- Candlewyck
May 7-- David Childers and the Modern Don Juans
May 14-- Williamson Brothers Band
May 21-- TCB and Hobart Willis & the Back Forty, Reunion Show
May 28-- The Coundown Quartet
June 4-- Barefoot Manner
June 11-- Nikki Meets the Hibachi & The Parsons EndBlock
