Raleigh
THE SHINS, VETIVER
MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM—While there's plenty to love about the Shins' glimmering psych-pop, James Mercer's elliptical, image-rich lyricism and winsome delivery are even more central. While the band's latest, Wincing the Night Away, isn't a pinnacle, it continues a string of smart, tuneful albums. The languidly folk-pop Vetiver is helmed by ex-Greensboro resident Andy Cabic. Pay $29 at 8 p.m. —Chris Parker

Durham
THE PAJAMA GAME
DUKE UNIVERSITYThe Pajama Game gave new meaning to labor-management relations in 1954 and continues to impress with its "immortal pop-hit-spawning score" (New York Times). Hoof 'n' Horn's student production opened Thursday and continues through Oct. 28. For more info, visit www.duke.edu/web/hoofnhorn or call 684-4444. —Megan Stein

Chapel Hill
HIGHLAND HILLS BENEFIT
CAT'S CRADLE—Two weeks ago, a fire burned through one building of Chapel Hill's Highland Hills apartments, destroying possessions and injuring residents. Now Chapel Hill's community of musicians comes together to bring aid to the victims, including Birds & Arrows, Puritan Rodeo, Michael Holland and Sweet By & By. Definitely the Maybes close the bill. Bring donations to the 8 p.m. show. —Kathy Justice
