Soul Position

Local 506--It's not as much ironic as it sad that the first track on Things Go Better with RJ and AL, the new album from RJD2-Blueprint collaboration Soul Position, is called "No Gimmicks." At this boring point in the plot path of underground hip hop, it's become its own gimmick, replacing mainstream's talk of glitter and girls for insipid, repetitive commiseration about mainstream's talk of glitter and girls. It's boring, and it's the stuff that comes in heaps on Soul Position tracks. On the other hand, Blueprint's voice is great, and RJD2 can be a genius. Opener One.Be.Lo puts on great live sets, too. See it at 10 p.m. for $10. --Grayson Currin

Billie Joe Lamm Memorial Race

Wake County Speedway--Last week's action at the Wake County Speedway--off of Highway 401, between Garner and Fuquay-Varina--was cut short by rain. But the season is just heating up, and individual tensions between drivers are starting to build on the backstretch. Keep your eyes on the #51 cars, who tend to dominate the tracks late in the races. Get to the track early--around 7 p.m.--to see qualifying, and consider buying a $20 pit pass and getting to know the driver you may spend the rest of the night cheering. Trust me, there's no easier, quicker way to escape the city for a night. And they have killer (triple entendre implied) fried bologna sandwiches. General admission tickets are $12. --Grayson Currin
