Freddie McGregor, The Give Thanks Band

When: Thu., July 11, 9 p.m. 2013

Jamaican singer Freddie McGregor guested on his first track in '63 at age 7, and he's moved with reggae's currents ever since, dabbling in everything from ska and rocksteady to roots reggae, dub, ragga and dancehall. He actually recalls Bob Marley a bit and is notable for the particularly warm, soulful quality of his vocals, which hark back to reggae's roots in R&B. Though McGregor's biggest success happened in the '80s, he remains one of the style's most enduring artists. In January he released his first new album in seven years, Di Captain, featuring "Standing Strong," a collaboration with dancehall artist Gappy Ranks. —Chris Parker
