Opening This Week

THE BOX—Cameron Diaz stars in this Ethics 101 derivation about a box that produces $1 million for its possessor, but kills someone else in the process. Rated PG-13.

  • Guess what? It's Christmastime! Jim Carrey is Ebenezer Scrooge in "Disney's A Christmas Carol."
DISNEY'S A CHRISTMAS CAROL—Combining digital 3-D visuals with a 2.0 version of the animated, performance capture technology he employed five years ago in The Polar Express, director Robert Zemeckis conjures a phantasmagorical retelling of this venerable Victorian morality tale that also fully embraces Charles Dickens' dark themes (too dark for young children, I'm afraid, despite the Disney imprimatur). Jim Carrey pulls multiple voiceover duty, principally as the irascible Ebenezer Scrooge—rendered by Zemeckis as a reptilian apparition whose skeletal frame is seemingly held together only by withered flesh and a dingy overcoat. As 3-D snowflakes appear to fall inside the theater, Zemeckis pulls few punches during visits from Ghosts Past, Present, and Yet to Come (all voiced by Carrey), accurately summoning the sort psychological cataclysm that would instantly wipe away Scrooge's ingrained, crippling avarice. The result is conceptually imaginative and touching, carving out its own, unique place among the myriad adaptations of this holiday classic. Rated PG. —NM

THE FOURTH KIND—Somebody gets taken for a ride in this sci-fi thriller, and it's not the denizens of Nome, Alaska who suffered a high rate of disappearance that this movie tries to blame on aliens but the real-life FBI blamed on alcoholism and the cold. Perhaps it is the purported psychologist and hypnotist "Dr. Abigail Tyler," whose conveniently blurry footage of paranormal activity is interspersed with dramatic reenactments of those same and other unrecorded events (during which she is portrayed by Milla Jovovich). Or, maybe it is director Olatunde Osunsanmi, who seems to buy into the story during replays of his 2002 interview with an ashen, traumatized Tyler (not played by Jovovich). Or, most likely, it's the audience snookered by a tall tale foisted onto them via easily faked material and a notable lack of documented, corroborating evidence. Regardless, not a minute of film rings true—call it Close Encounters of the Absurd Kind. Rated PG-13. —NM

LONDON DREAMS—Two childhood friends clash when professional and romantic rivalries threaten to destroy a titanic British rock band helmed by driven Arjun (Ajay Devgn) and happy-go-lucky Mannu (Salman Khan). —LB

THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS—Star-studded, quirky dramedy based on the book about a CIA program to train psychics and mystics. Rated R.

A SERIOUS MAN—The Coen brothers' A Serious Man takes place almost exclusively in 1967 in the Jewish community of a small town in Minnesota that the social upheaval of the '60s hasn't fully reached yet, where the aforementioned serious man, college professor Larry, is watching his life fall apart. His wife is leaving him for a widower whose dearly departed is "barely cold," his brother is getting in trouble with the law, a flunking student's father is threatening a lawsuit, and—disaster of all disasters—F-Troop is coming in fuzzy. While this is in many ways an unlikable film with (at best) questionable intent, it would be irresponsible not to marvel at its formal efficiency and reckless anti-philosophy. A Serious Man is not a serious movie, but it demands a complicated response. Rated R. Read our review. —NG

Current Releases

AMELIA—This lushly photographed hagiography of Amelia Earhart—ably portrayed by Hilary Swank—feels like a nostalgic keepsake, dipped in amber and mounted for display. Director Mira Nair uses the tried-and-tired narrative flashback to oscillate between scenes along Earhart's doomed 1937 attempt to circumnavigate the globe and a by-the-numbers overview of her ascent to success and worldwide celebrity. Along the way, the narrow screenplay also tracks her marriage to publisher George P. Putnam (Richard Gere, playing Richard Gere) and (purported) dalliance with aviation pioneer Gene Vidal (a clumsily used Ewan McGregor). Flashing Earhart's toothy grin, Midwestern lilt, and lanky, androgynous frame, Swank again reminds us that her dual Oscars are no fluke. Too often, however, she is given little to say beyond greeting-card treacle and mildly progressive platitudes. The safe and conventional result, unfortunately, is nothing like the daring, transformative woman at its center. Amelia should have soared. Instead, it simply cruises along on autopilot. Rated PG. —NM

ASTRO BOY—Directed by Aardman Animations vet David Bowers, this origin story takes place in the futuristic Metro City, a floating metropolis carved from an earthen surface it now uses as a giant landfill. When one of Metro's leading scientists (voiced by Nicholas Cage) loses his son, Toby (Freddy Highmore), during a laboratory accident, he implants Toby's neural makeup into a robotic doppelganger equipped with extraordinary powers. Astro Boy finds refuge with defrocked human surface dwellers, with whom he learns lessons about prejudice, heroism and the essence of humanity. Rated PG. —NM

BRIGHT STAR—Jane Campion's latest is the story of the love affair between poet John Keats (Ben Whishaw) and the sexy flirt Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish). The pace of Bright Star ambles along, luxuriating in John's malaise and poking around the corners of the rambling house that he and Abby occupy. One of the year's best. Rated PG. —NG

CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY—Whether this latest entry in Michael Moore's canon of dogmatic documentaries will appeal to you or not hinges, as always, on your political bent. Capitalism is a broadside attack against the haves in the name of the have-nots. On the other hand, Moore's oeuvre of manipulative editing, juvenile japery and cheap theatrics has rarely felt more tiresome. Rated R. —NM

COCO BEFORE CHANEL—Chanel was a fashion revolutionary. Her designs emphasized not the feminine adornments that men want to see, but the women who wore the clothes. Inspired by menswear, nun habits and sailor jerseys, she simplified and democratized 20th-century styles, proving that comfort and chic could coexist. The woman who did that must have been a force of nature, but one would never know from Audrey Tatou's prim, restrained performance. The film takes place around 1910, with Chanel alienated from her stratified society and the froufrou fashions of the day. Surely, Chanel, not as pretty as Tatou, must have had a dazzling personality to entice all those men, especially the two in particular who shared what the real Chanel called "my hot little body" when the film takes place, more or less around 1910. If only Tatou could have summoned a little more fire, she could have melted the glacial pace of this ambitious biopic. Coco Before Chanel presents an intriguing subject in need of a bit of crisp styling. —LB

COUPLES RETREAT—The kid with coke-bottle glasses from A Christmas Story, aka "Ralphie" (Peter Billingsley) directs this tedious comedy about four couples who visit destination island "Eden" for a little harmonious marriage healing. Perhaps the film's biggest fault is general comedic lameness, the pigeonholing of African American actors into shallow stereotypes and banking on shark attacks and a dry-humping yoga instructor for laughs. —KJ

DISTRICT 9—South African director Neil Blomkamp's film provides a glimpse of the chaos and racism that ensues in Johannesburg when aliens, marooned on Earth for more than 20 years, attempt to integrate into human society. Rated R. —NM

GOOD HAIR—Acting as this documentary's master of ceremonies, gadabout and truth seeker, Chris Rock examines historical and cultural aspects of African-American—principally female—hair, the central focus being the decided tendency to equate "good" or beauty with European or Asian hairstyles. Good Hair is a compelling conversation starter that manages to be both good-natured and informative. Rated PG-13. —NM

MICHAEL JACKSON'S THIS IS ITThis isn't the authoritative Jackson concert film—for that, watch the Live in Bucharest concert DVD filmed during his Dangerous tour in 1997-98. Instead, it's a last look at the highlights of Jackson's solo catalog and a poignant coda to his lifework. Audiences will walk away sure of two things: It would have been a hell of a concert, and it was—leaving all else aside—a brilliant career. Rated PG. —NM

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY—Director-writer Oren Peli's focus on the slow-burning tension and fear between the couple and their paranormally charged environment is momentarily entrancing but the amateur affect of the leads and a tired bag of fright tricks ultimately undermine this film's Blair Witch aspirations. Rated R. —KJ

PARIS—Director-writer Cédric Klapisch, maker of such cinematic meringues as L'auberge espagnole and Russian Dolls, returns with a can't-miss piece of Gallic festishism starring Romaine Duris as a dying dancer and Juliette Binoche as his sister. Mélanie Laurent, made famous by her role as the cinema owner in the similarly Francophiliac Inglourious Basterds, also has a part. Rated R.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE—Director Spike Jonze expands Maurice Sendak's acclaimed 48-page, 10-sentence children's book with the same visual and narrative daring he brought to Being John Malkovich. After an unhappy young boy, Max (Max Records), throws a violent temper tantrum one night for the benefit of his divorced, equally melancholy mom (Catherine Keener), he dons a wolf costume and retreats to an imaginary island inhabited by large talking beasts. With its emphasis of mood, the film ends up being more a portrait of sadness and disillusionment than a story about fully realized characters racked with those same emotions. Rated PG. —NM

ZOMBIELAND—This take-the-zombies-to-the-amusement-park romp isn't as funny or scary as Shaun of the Dead but, at an efficient 88 minutes, it's an amusing diversion boasting some nifty art direction, makeup and performances. Rated R. —NM

Due to the possibility of last-minute scheduling changes, we recommend calling ahead to theaters to confirm showtimes.
