Opening This Week

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS—A scientist who attempts to solve world hunger instead creates a ubiquitous rain of meatballs. Rated PG.

DIL BOLE HADIPPA (THE HEART SAYS BRAVO)—Feisty Punjabi village belle Veera (Rani Mukherji) longs to play cricket, a game that's just for boys. She dons turban and beard to join the team when a cutie-pie English coach (Shahid Kapoor) arrives to train the locals. Expect sport (brush up on your cricket rules), romance and loads of jumping bhangra music. Not rated. —LB

LORNA'S SILENCE—A tense, thrilling morality tale from the Dardenne brothers. Rated R. Read our review.DF

LOVE HAPPENS—Aaron Eckhart plays a self-help author; Jennifer Aniston stars as his love interest. Rated PG-13.

JENNIFER'S BODY—It-girl Megan Fox plays a possessed high school cheerleader who seduces and murders local boys. Rated R.

SÉRAPHINE—A moving true tale of Séraphine Louis, an eccentric French washerwoman with an uncanny gift for painting. Not rated. Read our review.NM

WANTED—Hardcore gangster Radhe (Salman Khan) is caught between factions in a Mumbai gang war as he seeks to protect the innocent Jhanvi (Ayesha Takia) from the lustful eye of a corrupt police inspector (Mahesh Manjrekar). Slo-mo gore rivals flashy musical numbers for screen time. —LB

Current Releases

9—Based on director Shane Acker's short film, 9 explores the dangers of man's over-reliance on technology. Waking up after the destruction, an anthropomorphic rag doll called 9 (voiced by Elijah Wood) sets about to uncover the truth behind the desolate world he finds himself in. On his journey, he meets others like him and convinces them that they must fight the evil machines—not cower from them. A real eye for subtlety and characterization sets this film apart from your average action-saturated doomsday flick. Rated PG-13. —BD

(500) DAYS OF SUMMER—This twee romantic comedy concerns Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who falls hard for Summer (Zooey Deschanel), the boss' new assistant. Priding itself on name-dropping cultural identifiers, the movie doesn't pick many that tell us anything unique about Tom or Summer, even as it uses their patter about pop to substitute for any rapport between them. Rated PG-13. —NG

ADAM—At first blush, disparaging a heart-of-gold film like this is rather like pulling the wings off a butterfly. The eponymous Adam (Hugh Dancy) suffers from Asperger's Syndrome and lives alone in his NYC apartment. Enter Beth (Rose Byrne), the nice girl in a strange town, who is drawn to her socially inept neighbor. Writer-director Max Mayer uses Adam's condition as a gimmick to prop up an otherwise humdrum plot. Rated PG-13. —NM

ALL ABOUT STEVE—Mary Horowitz (Sandra Bullock), walking encyclopedia and cruciverbalist (that is, she makes crossword puzzles), falls head over red-booted heels in love with a hunky news cameraman Steve (Bradley Cooper). A series of quirky missteps follow, such as a trip Mary makes down a mineshaft, attempt to provide the necessary yuks, but these hijinks fall flat. Rated PG-13. —BD

COLD SOULS—Paul Giamatti plays a character named Paul Giamatti, an actor suffering from intense malaise, tormented by his role as Ivan in Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. Constructed from a premise that is set up to meditate on an obvious point—we are troubled creatures, but that's what makes us human—Cold Souls is made up almost entirely of scenes whose points are obvious from the establishing shot and that play out to bland, predictable results. Rated PG-13. —NG

DISTRICT 9—South African director Neil Blomkamp's film provides a glimpse of the chaos and racism that ensues throughout Johannesburg when aliens, marooned on Earth for over 20 years, attempt to integrate into human society. Blomkamp's quasi documentary-style approach lends an unsettling verisimilitude to not just the aliens themselves, but also the social, legal and corporate constructs that have sprung up around them. The finale devolves into a rather traditional sci-fi action flick full of firefights and chase scenes. Still, the moral and ethical questions posed during the opening act linger long after blood stops splattering against the fourth wall. Rated R. —NM

EXTRACT—Mike Judge, creator of Beavis & Butthead and King of the Hill, has a real talent for toeing the line of caricature without stooping to condescension is again on display, and his look at the workplace milieu recalls his cult fave, Office Space. Here, Jason Bateman plays Joel Reynold, the owner of a flavored extract factory beset by professional and personal woes. At home, Joel is trapped in a sexless marriage. With this film, Judge comes off as a working man's Woody Allen ... or a kindler, gentler Judd Apatow. Too bad he doesn't make nearly as many movies. Rated R. —NM

FINAL DESTINATION—Predecessors to this (purportedly) final Final have contemplated serious end-of-life questions that touch on human frailty and fate, even as they delivered delightfully intricate death scenes that bordered on the laughably absurd. But this final Final exists only as a frenetic and gory send-up of its past as it plods over old territory: Death is hot on the heels of four teenagers. Rated R. —KJ

GAMER—Gerrard Butler (300) stars in a high tech action blow-'em-up about death row inmates fighting to the, well, death in a huge, real-life video game. Rated R.

THE GOODS: LIVE HARD, SELL HARD—The comedic engines rev early with a supporting cast primarily populated by an alliance of Frat Pack, Judd Apatow, and Daily Show regulars. Ultimately, the storyline starts drifting all over the road and the glut of single-cell sexual and racial gags grows tiresome. While not a clunker, The Goods runs out of gas far short of its destination. Rated R. —NM

H2 (HALLOWEEN 2)—Heavy metal guru and horror buff Rob Zombie returns to the Halloween franchise for another stab at directing. Rated R.

THE HANGOVER—Todd Phillips's Frat Pack comedies (Road Trip, Old School), have always suffered from narrative patchiness, but the tight script for this tale of the aftermath of a raucous bachelor party might be his strongest film yet. Rated R. —ZS

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE—The recurring promise of "the darkest Harry Potter film yet" is finally realized the funniest, most visually sublime and, yes, darkest addition yet to the popular book-to-film series. Rated PG. —NM

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS—After a knockout opening, which is followed by some questionable stuff, something like a brilliant, smart and surprising film emerges when the action moves to Paris, where the objectives of the Basterds converge with a plan a young woman with a grudge cooks up in her movie theater—all of which dovetails with Quentin Tarantino's ever-diverse and encyclopedic film passion. Rated R. —DF

JULIE & JULIA—As Julia Child, the breathless enthusiast who rescued American cooking for a generation, Meryl Streep is an absolute delight, and poor Amy Adams doesn't have a chance. Julie & Julia cuts back and forth between parallel narratives: Here we see the rise of an icon; there we see the rise of a briefly famous blogger. Contrary to the false equivalence promoted by the film, there's a big, big difference between Julia and Julie. Rated PG-13. —DF

POST GRAD—Ryden Malby (Alexis Bledel) is a recent college graduate, confident that she'll land her dream job at a publishing house. Her plans don't quite work out, but all Bledel has to do is bat her eyelashes adorably and we know she's going to get out of this or that pickle. Supporting players J.K. Simmons, Carol Burnett and Jane Lynch are relegated to supporting parts when they could've stolen (and saved) the show. Rated PG-13. —SE

PONYO—Hayao Miyazaki has done it again. Five-year-old boy Sosuke finds a small fish that have gotten lost after abandoning her family to explore the world. Sosuke adopts the fish and names her Ponyo, and she adores him right back. Ponyo's father sends his water minions to retrieve her but learns to his horror that she wants to return to land to live as a human girl. For the English-language release, the voice cast includes Cate Blanchett, Liam Neeson and Tina Fey. As always, the production effects are haunting, gorgeous and wonderfully inventive—particularly the water settings. Rated G. —SE

TYLER PERRY'S I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF—Perry's various alter egos return. Rated PG-13.

WHITEOUT—Kate Beckinsale stars as a law enforcement official investigating a murder in Antarctica. Rated R.

WORLD'S GREATEST DAD—This not-bad Bobcat Goldthwait-directed film stars Robin Williams as a gentle high school poetry teacher. His two biggest disappointments, however, are his failed efforts at a writing career and his own teenage son, a boorish, hateful jerk. On the plus side, however, he's carrying on with a much younger, very cute art teacher (Alexie Gilmore). As the son, Daryl Sabara's performance is both repellent and oddly heroic. He's so good, however, that when the story shifts gears in a way that minimizes his presence, the film's energy flags while the three-act formula takes the reins of an increasingly predictable story. Rated R. —DF
