Opening This Week

DRAGONBALL: EVOLUTION—The '90s anime phenomenon used cutting-edge animation and the same formulaic storyline, recycled ad nauseum (impossibly strong trash-talking alien enemy! Hero nearly dies! Big explosions! Fast kung-fu!) to become a massive cult hit among the Cartoon Network's bong set. It remains to be seen how well aliens with tails who turn into giant gorillas when angry will translate to the big screen. Chow Yun-Fat stars as the wise sensei. Rated PG.

Colin Hanks and Emily Blunt co-star with John Malkovich in The Great Buck Howard, opening Friday. - PHOTO COURTESY OF MAGNOLIA PICTURES
THE GREAT BUCK HOWARD—What starts out seeming to be an excruciating occasion for John Malkovich to chew scenery ends up as a surprisingly deft, empathetic look at the culture of the entertainment industry's minor leagues (think Tom Arnold and Gary Coleman, who both make cameos). Malkovich is the title character, a washed-up mentalist playing in half-filled halls in America's hinterlands. Petulant, neurotic, delusional and cheesy, Buck Howard is nonetheless a consummately professional performer who can turn out the tricks, come rain or shine. His comeback attempt, which consumes most of the film, is narrated through the eyes of Troy Gable (Colin Hanks), a law school dropout making a foray into a showbiz career. In the film's second act, the orb-eyed, scene-stealing Emily Blunt shows up as a junior publicist from New York and very nearly walks off with the film. Also with Tom Hanks, Steve Zahn and Ricky Jay. Rated PG. —DF

HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE—Only a Faustian bargain can explain the stardom of Miley Cyrus, aka Hannah Montana, but it's our souls that are left picking up the tab when subjected to the mind-numbing idiocy in this second film in the Montana canon. Caught up in the insular popularity of her celebrity alter ego, Miley is shanghaied by her dad (Billy Ray Cyrus) back to her Tennessee home for some "Hannah detox." Miley pratfalls her way through such authentic, homespun therapy as feedin' chickens, ridin' horses, gatherin' eggs and foot-stompin' hoedowns with Rascal Flatts and ... oh no, please, not Taylor Swift. There is also a blond, cowboy hat-sporting love interest, a pesky Brit tabloid reporter trying to dig dirt on Miley/ Hannah, and a real estate developer trying to erect a shopping mall against the town's Smoky Mountain skyline. In other words, it's one inane cliché after another, leaving all of us in dire need of some intensive Hannah detox. Rated G. —NM

OBSERVE AND REPORT—It is the darkest of dark comedies that draws inspiration from Taxi Driver. But it's not the visage of the lone, deranged vigilante that demarcates director and North Carolina native Jody Hill's latest. Instead, shopping mall security guard Ronnie Barnhardt (Seth Rogan) is the unhinged byproduct of the Bush-era delusion that sees evildoers around every kiosk and the call to arms as a path towards otherwise elusive notoriety and self-worth. So, when a serial flasher turns the mall into his personal peep show, Ronnie obsesses over bringing the perp to justice as a springboard to becoming a true police officer and impressing a dingy cosmetics salesgirl (Anna Faris). The inanity is offbeat and uproarious at times, but the script is rudderless and overly mean-spirited—there are only so many laughs you can comfortably draw from tableaus of mental illness, substance abuse, racism and date rape. To borrow a quote from someone who eavesdrops on Ronnie being rejected from the police force, "I thought this was going to be funny, but it's really just kinda sad." Rated R. —NM

ONE DAY YOU'LL UNDERSTAND—Amos Gitai's One Day You'll Understand is about Victor (Hippolyte Girardot), a middle-aged Parisian who is trying to find out from his mother Rivka (Jeanne Moreau), what she and her parents went through during the Holocaust, a question Rivka persistently evades. With varying degrees of self-consciousness or guilt, most filmgoers have thought to themselves about some movie or other, "Oh great. Another Holocaust movie." But One Day You'll Understand is not just another Holocaust movie. The ideas and questions contained in One Day speak directly to the reservations filmgoers—myself included—have about Holocaust movies. Gitai's film does not treat much of the Holocaust directly, and the best thing about it is the way it traces the relationships between Victor, his wife Françoise (Emmanuelle Devos) and Rivka. Current Releases

12 ROUNDS—Pro wrestler John Cena makes the leap from the ring to the big screen in this tale about a thief/ detective rivalry. Expect thoughtful dialogue, artistic production and a moving philosophical statement about the vague nature of morality. Or not. With Aidan Gillen, best known as Mayor Carcetti on The Wire. Rated R.

8 x 10 TASVIR (8 x 10 PHOTOGRAPH)—Akshay Kumar is leaving the knuckleheaded comedy behind for the moment in this supernatural action thriller directed by the excellent Nagesh Kukunoor. Ingenue Ayesha Takia and elegant 1970s heroine Sharmila Tagore co-star. Not rated. —LB

ADVENTURELAND—Everyone who ever had a crappy summer job during their younger years can relate to the subculture in Adventureland. When his parents are suddenly unable to fund a post-college graduation European dream vacation or tuition to journalism school at Columbia University, James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) must settle for a menial job d'été as a carnie running rickety rides and rigged games at the local amusement park. The formulaic plot evokes dozens of similar coming-of-age dramedies such as Garden State and Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist that similarly fail to rise to the level of a John Hughes '80s demi-classic. Writer-director Greg Mottola's seems to aim for a kindler, gentler version of his hit Superbad. But, in an effort to sate the ribald comedic sensibilities of the Apatow crowd and the arthouse sensibilities of the Sundance crowd, Mottola doesn't do justice to either camp. Rated R. —NM

DUPLICITY—There's a playful though infuriating glee in piecing together the jigsaw puzzle plot of corporate espionage while basking in the effervescent glow of writer-director Tony Gilroy's rom-com romp—think The Thin Man meets David Mamet. Two corporate spies (Clive Owen and Julia Roberts) team-up to game a high-stakes rivalry between competing conglomerates for their personal gain, while at the same time trying to reconcile their affection and mistrust for each other—now, think Yojimbo meets To Catch a Thief. The two leads are engaging, especially Roberts, who captivates whether she's flashing her disarming smile or shooting an icy glare. What erodes their chemistry—and the audience's patience—is Gilroy's labyrinthine narrative structure, with its jumble of backstabbing, double-twists and chronological hopscotching. Having fun shouldn't be such hard work. Rated PG-13. —NM

FAST AND FURIOUS—Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Michelle Rodriguez attempt to jump-start stalled careers by returning to the vehicle that fueled their initial accelerations to stardom. Rated PG-13.

THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT—This bland haunted-house story doesn't offer many starts or spooks, but should have considered sketching some details into any of the relationships between its half-dozen characters. But maybe the most disappointing thing about it is that it refuses to offer the pleasant details that should come with a period piece: It takes place in 1987, though you'd never know it from the hair, clothes, cars or from the fact that Matt has no idea what ectoplasm is. Wouldn't he have just seen Ghostbusters? Rated PG-13. —NG

HOTEL FOR DOGS—Two plucky orphans, their friends, and an unexpected Don Cheadle cultivate a substitute family in an abandoned hotel-turned-dog sanctuary. It features entertaining inventions for dog care, and is refreshingly low on poop jokes. Rated PG. —HT

I LOVE YOU, MAN—This delightfully uncomplicated comedy draws from the Judd Apatow casting pool in a formula-flipping tale about a friendless milquetoast, Peter (Paul Rudd), whose fiancée, Zooey (Rashida Jones), pushes him into man-dates in search of a BFF and, hopefully, best man for their wedding. Enter Sydney (Jason Segel), a Lebowski-esque dude whose nonchalant persona masks the same loneliness as Peter. The script crackles whenever Rudd and Segel share the screen and riff off each other's pop-culture repartee. However, Peter and Zooey's relative lack of sizzle is symptomatic of a screenplay too preoccupied with infantile homo-hilarity. Rated R. —NM

KNOWING—M.I.T. astrophysics professor John Koestler (Nicholas Cage) lives a sad existence with a hand on the bottle and a foot in the laboratory after his wife's untimely death. One day, his precocious son brings home an ancient paper crammed with numbers from a 1959 time capsule. Koestler uncovers the paper's fate as numeric codes to past, present and future disasters point to earth's final doomsday fate. Director Alex Proyas wins over his audience with a thoughtful narrative focused on the secret nature of the world humans inhabit and an obvious penchant for weird science TV (The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits) that asks the questions we are afraid to know the answers to. Rated PG-13. —KJ

THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT—This redux of Wes Craven's debut keeps the original plot—a college girl vacations in a lakeside home with her parents, wanders out for fun with a friend in town, then stumbles upon a gang of killers. Here, Greek director Dennis Illiadis lends intimacy to the film through artistic moments (a camera lingers on a red wall and a body floats gently in a pool of blood and water) that far outweigh the provocative brutality of an extended rape scene and brutal stabbing. Rated R. —KJ

MONSTERS VS ALIENS—1950s creature-feature schlock meets high-tech parody in this slight but heady animated flick that subsists on eye-popping visuals (the 3-D version comes highly recommended), witty one-liners and spot-on voice casting. Spoofing films ranging from The Fly to Creature from the Black Lagoon to the Toho studio monsters, Susan's running mates include a mad scientist-cum-cockroach (Hugh Laurie), a 20,000-year-old fish-ape hybrid (Will Arnett), a jolly, gelatinous blue blob (Seth Rogen), and a gigantic grub. This Dreamworks Animation offering is a pale comparison with the likes of Pixar's The Incredibles in terms of both plot and import. But, it does demonstrate that sometimes it takes trashing an alien robot for a gal to get her groove back. Rated PG. —NM

RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN—Disney revisits their Witch Mountain franchise in this innocuous diversion that is pleasant enough viewing granted you don't bother applying even a modicum of logic. Otherwise, you'll wonder why two space travelers (a delightful AnnaSophia Robb and dour Alexander Ludwig) who assume human form and exhibit superpowers—one can alter his molecular structure and the other is capable of reading minds, levitating objects, blowing things up, operating a car telepathically, etc.—need the help of a Las Vegas cabbie (Dwayne Johnson) whose woebegone backstory is belied by the fact that, well, he looks like The Rock. Rated PG. —NM

THE READER—The early scenes, set in Berlin of 1955, are a unending prologue of tinkling music, muted colors, longing glances, lovingly caressed flesh and worship of literature. When the film displays its hand, however, we get more interesting film about the limits of legal and moral responsibility for the atrocities of World War II and in the individual and collective guilt of the German people. Rated R. —DF

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE—Blending historical perspective, grim reality, whimsy and starry-eyed romance, director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting) crafts a masterful cinematic masala about an 18-year-old Muslim and former street orphan suspected of cheating during his successful run on a Hindi version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Rated R. —NM

SUNSHINE CLEANINGSunshine Cleaning is a pleasant drama about sisters Rose and Norah (Amy Adams and Emily Blunt, great together) who start a business cleaning up crime scenes. Rose has some experience cleaning up after pool parties and rich people, but for the most part she and Norah wing it, initially cleaning blood out of shower stalls with bleach spray and a toothbrush. If director Christine Jeffs and writer Megan Holley (or their producers) realized how well these scenes worked, they could have built their whole movie on them. Unfortunately, Sunshine is burdened by a shoehorned back story and superfluous side stories that distract from the struggles of starting a business and the chemistry that Adams and Blunt have with each other. It's too polite a movie to actively dislike, but too overwhelmed by its own blandness to recommend. Rated R. —NG

TAKENTaken has a lot in common with its main character, a vengeful uber-dad played by Liam Neelson. The film is brutal, hyper-kinetic and slightly xenophobic. As a film that explores the issue of sex slavery, it's a blunt tool; It will only succeed in terrifying the parents of kids who want to travel. However, it's a well-made and solid action thriller, and action films are rarely successful teachers. This one wisely falls back into the old standbys: gun fights and car chases. Rated PG-13. —HT

WATCHMEN—This is a phantasmagorical mind trip, but not about the psychology of America's popular culture as much as the psychology of America itself. The film is visually arresting and thought-provoking; it is also bloated and unwieldy. Some will regard it as a cinematic work of art; others will see sheer fanboy pornography. It must be said that the opening two scenes are brilliant—and hover like an unmet promise throughout the remainder of the almost interminable 161-minute running time. Rated R. —NM
