Every Sunday in July can be a Chocolate Sunday

It's important, this time of year, to know your frozen dessert options, in case it's a hundred freaking degrees outside and you'd rather not turn on your oven to whip up emergency cookies as you—and, of course, I'm only talking about you—would do, you know, otherwise.

In Durham, I'm late getting on the LoYo bandwagon. (But, better late than—wow, they have Golden Grahams!) Local Yogurt (2501 University Drive, Durham, 489-5900, www.localyogurt.com) opened in May. Three locals own it: Grace Beason, her husband, Matthew Beason, and Ted Domville. (Matthew and Ted are, respectively, the owner and chef of Six Plates Wine Bar, also in Durham).

The owners source some toppings from local purveyors, including Thomson Ranch for blueberries and blackberries, Busy Bee Apiaries for honey, Dolly Mama for chocolate, and so on. They also have nonlocal toppings, like potato chips and kiddie breakfast cereals, to dress their rotating core of flavors: original (plain), mango, chocolate and coffee. The shop is open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday noon to 9 p.m.

Every Sunday in July can be a Chocolate Sunday, a reason to eat a chocolate sundae. That's because the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences (11 W. Jones St., Raleigh, 733-7450) has invited ice-cream vendors to show up on Sundays, in tandem with Chocolate: The Exhibition.

The vendors (Maggie Moos on July 12 and 26, Ben & Jerry's on July 19) will set up in Bicentennial Plaza, just outside the museum, from noon to 4:30 p.m. With an ice cream purchase, customers will get an ice cream cone stamp on their hand, which guarantees $1 off admission to the exhibition.

Chocolate: The Exhibition, which continues through Sept. 7, takes visitors on a journey of chocolate's history, from the plant in the rain forest to the goodness in the mouth—in other words, "the plant, the products and the culture of this sumptuous sweet through the lenses of science, history and popular culture." Exhibit hours are Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Last tickets are sold at 3 p.m. Adult tickets are $7, seniors and students, $5 and children ages 5-11, $4.

Finally, a review of Locopops locations. This local chain (ilovelocopops.com, 286-3500) has expanded and contracted, moved and moved again, but here's the current lineup: In Durham, Locopops has one location (the original) at 2600 Hillsborough Road. In Chapel Hill, you won't find a paleta on West Franklin Street any more; head over to 128 E. Franklin, or 231 S. Elliott Road. And in Raleigh, there's a Locopops at 1908 Hillsborough St. All locations are open daily from noon to 9 p.m.
