Elvisfest

When: Jan. 11-12, 7:30 p.m. 2013

Now celebrating its 15th year, the Elvisfest celebration has grown into an institution, much like Winston-Salem's Heavy Rebel Weekend. Dave Quick helped found both, and his Elvis cover band, TCB '56, has played every Elvisfest. After many years on West Franklin, it wandered down to the Holiday Inn's Time Out Sports Bar. This year, the festivities move across the street to Bailey's. Across two nights, 18 bands will tackle a couple of Elvis covers each, and there are usually samples of The King's gastronomic revelation, peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

This year's fest is missing many of past years' out-of-state vets such as Billy Jo Winghead and Psychocharger, but it compensates with some of our very best locals, including the timeless Dexter Romweber & the New Romans, sultry torch-country singer Taz Halloween's band Kitty Box & the Johnnies, Chris Bess's Link Wray tribute band Phatlynx and George Jones acolytes John Howie Jr. & the Rosewood Bluff. But don't miss Portland's Drunken Prayer (whose roots noir runs from blues-folk to gospel-soul), female-led Triad garageabilly rockers The Malamondos, and New Jersey jump-blues trio April Mae & the June Bugs. The music starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; tickets are $12 each night. Search for "Elvisfest Bailey's" on Facebook for more info. —Chris Parker
