Doris Betts Tribute with Lyn Fairchild Hawks & David Frauenfelder

When: Sat., Sept. 14, 2 p.m. 2013

The death last year of UNC's Doris Betts marked the passing of one of the great writers in the Southern tradition. Two of the writers she mentored, Lyn Fairchild Hawks and David Fraunfelder, pay tribute to her with an afternoon of reminiscences and readings from their own new books. Hawks' How Wendy Redbird Dancing Survived the Dark Ages of Nought is about a Michael Jackson-crazed white girl who, beset by the King of Pop's passing, finds herself guided west by his ghost. Frauenfelder's Skater in a Strange Land concerns a hockey player who finds himself on a team in a bizarre foreign country full of airships and conspiracies. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own Betts stories. Did you know that her story "The Ugliest Pilgrim" was turned into an Oscar-winning short film and a stage musical? That's range right there. —Zack Smith
