Deadline near for (nearly) free dogwood trees

If your yard looks like a lunar landscape, then you need trees. And the National Arbor Day Foundation wants to give them to you. The nonprofit group is giving away 10 white flowering dogwoods to anyone who buys a $10 membership. Deadline is March 31.

The 6- to 12-inch trees will be shipped by May 31 with enclosed planting instructions. Dogwoods bloom not only in spring, but burst into scarlet fall foliage and bear red berries in winter.

The trees are guaranteed to grow and will be replaced for free. Members also receive a subscription to Arbor Day, the foundation's monthly publication, and The Tree Book, which details tree planting and care. Join online at or send your contribution and mailing information to Ten Free Dogwood Trees, National Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NB 68410.
