Broken Prayer, Meat Group, No Love

When: Thu., Jan. 31, 9 p.m. 2013

Among four stellar new releases bearing the Sorry State Records imprint, Broken Prayer's self-titled debut is the most surprising—and perhaps the most rewarding, too. Steered by former Civic Progress vocalist Scott Plant, Broken Prayer trounces punk orthodoxy for a sound that sneers, surges and spasms. It's like a mid-career Black Flag charged with Suicide's synth-throb, or maybe Whatever Brains by way of Iron Lung. Contrasting Broken Prayer's wild variety, Charlotte's Meat Group favors a streamlined approach. No Love, a new band that claims a space "somewhere on the spectrum between Wire and Screeching Weasel," makes its debut as the bill's opener. Pay $5 at 9 p.m.; visit slimsraleigh.com. —Bryan C. Reed
