Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band

When: Sat., April 27, 8 p.m. 2013

Bob Seger is sort of a poor man's Springsteen, born to balladry and with a heartland version of The Boss's blue-collar ethos. His blend of bluesy garage boogie and white-boy soul is deeply informed by his Detroit upbringing. His gruff, hard-bitten rockers dive headlong at times into cliché—one sometimes wonders if they were heading uphill in addition to Against the Wind. But at his best, Seger speaks convincingly of the heart's twisted wants. He has an endearing plainspoken yet poetic manner, whether it's his wide-eyed Midwestern boy meets Hotel California song "Hollywood Hills" or his more touching paean to teenage sexual awakening, "Night Moves." The latter is as honest and poignant an expression of those innocent days as you'll ever hear: "We weren't searching for some pie-in-the-sky summit, we were just young and restless and bored." Weren't or aren't we all? —Chris Parker
