Blue Ridge Chamber Players

When: Sun., Feb. 3, 3 p.m. 2013

Read almost any writing about abstract painting and you're bound to find references to music, too. The NCMA's "Sights and Sounds on Sundays" series sets music to works from its permanent collection, presented at this show by Charlotte's Blue Ridge Chamber Players. Amy Orsinger Whitehead (flute), Nick Lampo (cello) and Tomoko Deguchi (piano) will play 20th-century works by Gaulbert, Abramovic and Crumb. But the highlight of the program is the premiere of a commission that Winthrop University composer Ronald Keith Parks based on eight works in the museum. His "/// Elements" features a section written as a reaction to works by abstract masters such as Robert Motherwell, along with works by North Carolinians such as Thomas Sayre's monumental outdoor sculpture "Gyre," George Bireline's optical painting "Matisse Window" and Kenneth Noland's minimal field painting "Greek Vision." A video segment of each work will show as the piece is played. The 3 p.m. program costs $12, or $10 for museum members and students. Visit ncartmuseum.org. —Chris Vitiello
