Birds of Avalon, Airstrip, Righteous Bros

When: Fri., April 26, 10 p.m. 2013

At this moment in Triangle rock music, it's hard to imagine a better pairing than Airstrip and Birds of Avalon. The Birds are the veteran outfit, a point proven by their mercurial combinations of mainstream '70s esprit tangled in psych-rock tangents. Soaring choruses and melodies arrive by way of skewed guitar leads and effects-enriched harmonies, in colorful contrast to the classic rock landscape. Airstrip—a newer band, fresh off its first LP—delivers pointed and relentless pop hinging on Matthew Park's cutting, loop-beguiled hooks. They surge through weighty guitar fuzz, hardened by a rhythm section that also powers Horseback's avant-metal wanderings. The Righteous Bros—the DJ outlet of Megafaun members Nick Sanborn and Brad Cook—open. —Jordan Lawrence
