Billy Childs Jazz Chamber Ensemble & Dianne Reeves, The Ying Quartet

When: Fri., Oct. 4, 8 p.m. 2013

Enlightened Souls commemorates a crucial moment of institutional enlightenment—namely that of Duke University, which first began admitting black students in 1963. As part of this year's events to mark the 50th anniversary of that historic first, Duke Performances commissioned a work from prodigious Los Angeles-born composer and jazz pianist Billy Childs. Honored with Grammys and a Guggenheim, and having played gigs with Sting and Yo-Yo Ma, Childs has moved from orchestral commissions to solo jazz work to a chamber jazz amalgam drawing on both influences. For this commission, he built a song cycle that incorporates the peerless jazz vocals of Dianne Reeves, with whom he worked on a Grammy-winning album featuring the songs of Sarah Vaughan. Along with Childs' luminous keyboards, instrumentation comes from the celebrated Ying Quartet and Childs' 10-piece Jazz Chamber Ensemble. The event will appropriately commemorate another first: It's the debut major performance in the newly revitalized Baldwin Auditorium. —David Klein
