Bassekou Kouyate, Fatoumata Diawara

When: Fri., Feb. 14, 8 p.m. 2014

The concert billed as One Night in Bamako promises transport to the capital of Mali, the cradle of the blues. The show unites two generations of Malian music and two of its most powerful figures: mature ngoni master Bassekou Kouyate and young guitarist/singer-songwriter Fatoumata Diawara. Kouyate raised the stature of the humble ngoni, a West African lute, to an amplified solo instrument. Diawara, meanwhile, delivers her acrobatic vocal lines with coolness and restraint. Her oft-danceable songs champion the rights of women, immigrants and children. Both artists wrest eloquence from understatement, but expect compelling synergy and mesmerizing rhythms when they pair with Kouyate's backing band, Ngoni Ba. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
