A Queer Kiss

When: Jan. 16-20 2013

Viewers who witnessed the sea change that Ariel Dorfman's drama Purgatorio underwent in a single February weekend at Duke a few years back know what can happen when a playwright decides to get everything possible from developmental stagings in front of a live audience. In this year's New Plays Workshop at Deep Dish, a single "what would it be like" kiss between two teenage boys spins out into a conflagration threatening two families and the lives of one of the boys. Chicago playwright Joel Drake Johnson's script is based on a true story; he'll be here, working with an ensemble including Jane Holding, Tony Lea and MaryKate Cunningham, revising the work throughout the five staged readings this week. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $12 for all shows except Saturday night, when Deep Dish hosts its annual fundraising gala ($50 singles, $80 couples). —Byron Woods
