Free shuttle bus to Durham Farmers Market is another reason to eat your vegetables

By the time you've lugged a dozen ears of corn, a carton of farm fresh eggs, flowers, cheese and fragile peaches more than about five blocks, you're likely to have bruised fruit and scrambled yolks mingling in the bottom of your reusable bag.

So applaud DATA for its free shuttle from Durham station, 515 W. Pettigrew St., to the the market on Foster Street in Durham Central Park. The pilot program starts tomorrow and runs each Saturday morning through Aug. 23. The Bull City Connector bus will operate every 15 minutes from 7:30 to 11:45 a.m. The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon.

Until now, the only bus stop near the market was the No. 4, on Rigsbee Avenue, and the fare is $1. For people with disabilities or the elderly, that requires an uphill hike, and an extra buck that could be used for food.

The free bus will drop off riders at the corner of Corporation and Foster streets. Look for the bus with SPECIAL on its sign. You can track the bus route and arrival times at .
